Could I have grown out of my peanut allergy?

I recently ate a Cinnamon Toast Crunch brand cereal bar at school, and came home the next day to read the SAME EXACT BAR, and it said that it contains peanut ingredients. What's the chance that I actually did grow out my allergy?

I go into anaphylactic shock when i digest peanuts, if that helps.

Like people have said, it is possible that you have outgrown it, but not probable. Frankly, most of the people who do outgrow it are ones who had it as children and didn't have a very severe allergy. You have a severe allergy, so it's pretty unlikely. If you're really curious and willing to risk an allergy test, you could try getting tested (although, if you have a history of anaphylactic shock, skin tests are dangerous, as I'm sure you know).

A more likely scenario: there are a lot of foods that are labelled as containing peanuts which don't actually. Basically, if there's the slightest chance that a food product could have peanuts in it, manufacturers put that on the label. Most of the time, these foods don't actually have peanuts in them (or at least not enough to cause a reaction). Not to say that it's safe to eat these foods, because they can contain peanut particles (peanuts processed in another part of the factory, peanut oil with not all the protein stripped, etc) and you never know when you'll get one that'll set you off. It's just that a lot of manufacturers err on the side of extra-caution when it comes to labelling, because there's no real way to tell what's got peanuts and what doesn't, and the alternative is no label.

So, probably a fluke. Sucks, I know (I always get really hopeful when I do something like that, but no luck so far).

you need to be careful.. and get tested.. it is very possible.. but it's also possible that the actual peanut content was very small..
dont chance a reaction and see about visiting your doctor before chowing down!

I would not gamble. Find out from your Doc.

Most people with a severe allergy to penuts will keep it throughout their whole life. There would be a very small chance that it can be grown out of.

If it is a less prominent allergy, then it is possible that your body would build up its immunity so that you could 'grow out' of the allergy.

Everyone is different, but it would be quite uncommon to grow out of it.

Food allergies was one of the topics on The Today Show, and Peanut allergies were specifically mentioned. Only about 20% of children with peanut allergies out grow them. You may have gotten lucky this time, but each exposure can make you more sensitve, increasing your chances af having a fatal reaction. Talk to your doctor or allgergist and get retested if you want to know for sure, but don't assume the allergy is gone, it could be a fatal assumtion.

it is possible, but unlikely.

Did it say it contains it or MAY contain it? Because you won't grow out of the allergy unless you're the luckiest person with a peanut allergy. Maybe there wasn't enough in there to trigger a big reaction, but that seems a bit unlikely since I know how bad those reactions are and how little it takes to trigger it.

Here's some advice: DON'T EAT FOOD WITHOUT READING THE INGREDIENTS FIRST!!! You'll save yourself many trips to the ER. Also, carry an epi-pen and benedryl.

Yes, there is a possibility that you grew out of it. You should get tested to be absolutely sure. I grew out of my food allergy for eggs, carrots, and bananas.
