Anyone else with kids with Severe peanut allergy?

My son is 8 and he cannot even smell peanuts or he could go into anaphylactic shock. Of course you don't want them to be singled out all the time, it's not fair. But we have such a hard time with his school and getting the other parents to understand how severe it is. I have talked and talked and talked. What else can I do?
Anyone else who understands the situation first hand, your advice would be so helpful. Thanks.

Yeah, schools suck and he's going to be singled out and picked on. You can't stop that. Just teach him that people aren't always understanding and they do tease people who are different. It's a crappy lesson, but he's gotta learn it sometime. He needs to develop a thick skin and learn to speak up for his own safety. He probably won't have many friends.

I don't mean to make this sound horrible, it's just my personal experience with allergies. Elementary school was the worst, but by the time I got to college, my allergies didn't single me out and people liked me despite them. I still get teased by the a@%holes, but I don't want friends like that anyway.

The good news is that it's the most common food allergy so it does get a lot of notice and I've heard schools are more understanding than when I went through them several decades ago.

Something new that's out and may help him feel more normal is sunflower seed butter if he can eat sunflower seeds. You have to read the ingredients though because some brands say "processed in a facility that also processes peanuts" which is retarded, but then again, that goes to my previous point of the a's.

Good luck!

well yeah i have a cousin like that......

I'm allergic to dairy, soy, and tree nuts.
And I'm allergic to latex like your son is to peanuts.
My niece also has severe food allergies to egg, dairy, and soy.

My sister has little shirts, bags, shoelaces that say things like "I have food allergies"
It usually stops people from feeding my niece anything before asking.
I have a medical alert bracelet for my latex allergy.
It gives phone number/name/address and the allergy on it, just in case something happens and you're not there.
Also, do you have an epi-pen? I'm sure if he's that allergic to peanuts, the doctor would get one. If not, I highly recommend getting one in case of emergencies.
That's all for the medical part.

For the fitting in part, it's really difficult.
My sister ends up having to bring food for my niece every where with her. She can't even drink majority of drinks.
We have a list of foods that she can eat that we carry around with us.
Most fast food joints will give you nutritional info. and allergy alerts for all their food.

Here's the website of the merchandise for kids with allergies.
It's a really cute site.
