If my 8 month old had a skin test and was positive for a peanut allergy...?

how do I know how severely he is allergic? Right now he's breastfed and eats baby food fruits and vegetables, so I am cutting peanuts out of my diet (he went to the allergist for rashy skin). Down the line how will we know if he is still allergic to peanuts and if they just trigger his eczema or if he could have a life-threatening reaction?

Peanuts are a ubiquitous product, you'll find it every where. Nothing you can do to stop him from having an encounter with the stuff. It may not happen in school but it will happen.

Prepare for it and get ready for the worst. If nothing happens or it is just a mild version, you can sleep better after the event. But, till then stay on your toes.

Most kids outgrow food allergies by the age of 2. Until that point, it's just trial and error. Once he is older you'll just need to retest him to see if he still has it.

You should always treat it as if it's life threatening and carry an epi pen. What happens if you think it's just mild and within seconds he can't breathe?

Later I believe they can test him and know the severity.

My sister had her two year old tested and not only did the hive come up where they put the scratch but it created this kind of "tail" too. The doctor told her the tail signified that it was a serious allergy. So perhaps its the size of the reaction when they put that wee sample on their skin. You'll have to bring that up with the doctor again. They should know the answer to that.

And kids do NOT outgrow allergies by the time they are two!! Who told you that!?!?!?

well sorry to tell u but nut allergy is something that kids usually stay with for the rest of they life... as for the things like milk egg allergy there is a hope they may will get over it by the age of 5...u have to find an allergy specialist or a paediatrician who can give u the referral...because it is very serious matter so the specialist will be able to answer all Ur questions in more detailed manner...and one more thing do not forget to wright all the things u want to ask because ones u there it can be so overwhelming that u may forget to ask something....happened to me..lol...it was really hard to get used to the idea of my little girl been allergic to food so anyway good luck i hope this helps..............

Talk to your pediatrician. It's too risky to evaluate on your own. Plus, some people's allergies get worse as they age and some get better. It varies greatly by individual. I would say that they will likely retest him later though. That way, they can evaluate his progress and make recommendations.

There is no predicting if he will out grow the allergy or not. Every kid is different, some do, some don't.
The doctor should be able to tell you how bad his reaction is. The severity of the reaction on the test will tell how bad it is. Call the doctor back and ask him.
