If someone is allergic to peanuts/peanut butter, do they have allergies towards all nuts by default?

My son has a peanut allergy. Can he have other types of nuts, like pecans, walnuts, etc. Or is it still a trial and error thing?

Peanuts are a LEGUME, not a nut. If your son is allergic to peanuts it is possible to have additional allergies to foods that are also in the legume family, like to soy and soy products.

Tree nuts are an entirely separate allergen category. Tree nuts include almonds, Brazil nuts, cashews, hazelnuts (filberts), macadamia nuts, pecans, pine nuts (pignolias), pistachio nuts and walnuts.

An allergy to tree nuts is a possibility, it is one of the top allergens, but it would be unrelated to his peanut allergy.

Not necessarily. Peanuts aren't truly nuts, so you can be allergic to one and not the other. I'm extremely allergic to walnuts, etc but not to peanuts. But then again, you never know, he could be allergic to both. Not worth taking too many chances.

It's trial and error. One can be allergic to walnuts, yet not to hazelnuts...and so on.

peanuts are nuts just to let you know & if a person is allergic to nuts im pretty sure its ALL nuts. but its best to check with your doctor, for now i wouldnt eat anything with nuts!

i wouldn't play trial and error w/ my kid. The doc should be able to do a test to see what exactly it is that he is allgergic to. they did this to my sister by doing a "patch" test on her back. just small doses of things on little needles.

Yes and no. Alot of the time if you are allergic to one, you are allergic to both. My son is allergic to peanuts. He has not been tested for treenuts but we strongly avoid them, just to be safe. As advised by our allergist. My son has friends that are allergic to both.

Your son may do perfectly fine on treenuts. If you want to try them be sure to call and make sure it is okay with your doctor. Have an Epi-Pen handy. Use only fresh nuts (i.e those that YOU picked from the tree). Store bought nuts can contain peanuts and are not recommended for the peanut allergic.

Not by default. I know someone who is only allergic to tree nuts (pecans, walnuts, hazelnuts, etc), but not peanuts. However, it would be wise to cut out all nuts from his diet just to be safe. Nuts aren't so delicious that its worth risking anaphylactic shock.

One more thing, do not forget that people with nut allergy are more likely to also be allergic to chocolate and coffee.

I have a peanut allergy so just to be on the safe side, I avoid all nuts. Make sure you read EVERY label before giing your son anything. You would be surprised how many items are "manufactured in a plant where peanuts are processed".
If his allergy is severe enough, he could be thrown right into an attack if his food is cross contaminated with peanuts. Also ask in restaurants if anything is cooked in peanut oil or if any of his food could be contaminated by nuts. I do this every time I eat out. Better to be safe than sorry. Good luck.
