In healthcare, how are a patient's rights balanced with scarce resources? |
2 patient's come to the emergency room with a heart attack, both need an emergncy angiogram to save their life. One patient is 89yrs old. Her Dr. orders the procedure for her. There is a6 hr window for the procedure to be done. The other patient...49 yrs old is given priority because she's younger and will have a better chance of suvival. Resources are only available for one patient. Who gets the angiogram and why? Does the 89 yr old patients Dr. have a say in the choice? The one who is in worse condition. You can't decide who has a better chance of living the 49yr old could be a crack addict and die of an overdose tomorrow. Yes both Dr.s have a say but the one who is in worse shape should get it and the other wait until the next day. I probably know the answer but I wouldn't even want to think this could happen! I would say the hospital would reassign it's resources to accommodate it's needs or transfer one patient to another facility! |
