What are the terms of doctor/patient confidentiality??

I went to the doctor a couple of days ago for a regular checkup. The doc noticed that i cut myself. I didnt think she would notice because my cuts are pretty much healed. Anyway she was worried about them. She asked if my family was aware. I said no. I want to keep it that way. I am not suicidal. I don't do it all of the time and it not something am proud of. I am seeing a psychologist. I just dont want my parents worrying about me. My can't say anything to my parents because of doctor/patient confidentiality, right?? By the way I am over18 and in college.

Don't worry, the Dr can't talk to anybody about this without your permission. There are very few situation where a Dr can break confidentiality. Basically only if they think you are planning to kill yourself, or if they believe other people are in danger from you.

I would suggest that you talk to your Dr about this though. The sooner you get help with this the better. Best of luck.

no they can not legally talk to anyone, ANYONE, about your health care. but cutting is really silly, stop.

Nope they can't not legally. If they do they can be sued.

MD can only talk to another MD about a patient and then only if he is looking for professional advice in regards to the patient's treatment.
So no, she can't tell your parents.
