What are the nurses responsibility if a patient chooses the right to refuse care? paperwork? One time, it got so bad that the patient did not even want to sign his AMA paper. Against Medical Advice. He was so difficult that he just walk out. He was alert and oriented, and fully understood verbally. What can you do? Nothing. I just had to make sure I documented the situation very well. none. if you refuse care the nurses and physicians do not have an obligation to you as a patient anymore. The nurse has the responsiblity to educate the patient but if the patient refuses care you should certainly document in the nurses notes. Depending on what care the pt. is refusing, the MD may also need to be notified. Technically the patient discharges the nurse from all further responsibilty to him. Probably including the doctor's too. Have to see what is in the writing to see how this is defined. Anyway as a nurse, this is not going to be easy because you do care for your patient, whether under your care or not. |
