How long does a doctor have a legal right to issue a patient with a sick certificate without charging?

after a six month period are doctors obliged to issue a free sick certificate

i became to ill to work in June 2005 and I've been issued with sick notes free of charge since then.

for as long as the patient needs one i'd have thought

I'm not sure, but my GP will only issue them free of charge for 8 weeks and then you have to pay, they say it's not an NHS issue but a private issue. I think they only charge a fiver, but it's till alot if you have to pay it every two week for a few months.

as far as i am aware that is the case
