What is the Best Way for an opiate tolerant patient to approach the subject of surgery with their physician? |
I fell 40 ft. almost 4 years ago and have had many problems with pain since. I was a patient at a pain Clinic for almost two years before relocating. With no insurance I resorted to online US pharmacies to aquire my medication. Now I have ins. and need to have major Joint reconstruction in my Right foot. I have taken 2 Oxycodone 10mg. three times a day for the past six months (1 3x aday prior 2 yrs)with my Lyrica 75 mg 2x a dy and amitriptilyne 50 mg before bed. I need to come clean with my DR. but can loose the best job I have ever had if they find out through my Ins. What is the best way for me to break this to my Dr. and what do you think their response will be as well as options for treating my post op Pain and anesthesia. Is there any way you could go off of something first? If not, I think I would just be very blunt and maybe admit you know there is a problem for which you need help. Doctors do want to help people who want to help themselves. If there is a clear need for surgery I think they will do it for sure. They may also give you extra meds for post op (or you could just use some you have). Ideally, though, if you approach the dr in a way that is asking for help with the pain and the addiction (no matter how necessary an addiction) they will want to help. |
