Has anyone worked at a hospital as a patient transporter? I was thinking of working as one because I will be a nurse someday, and will need some experience in the hospital, and to have at least 1 foot in the door I guess. I heard that transporters don't need any hospital experience, is that right? also how much do they get? And for those who have this job, how do u like it?? and are the job hours flexible since i'm in college and want a pt time job. And if you work as a transporter, would you please note how a daily work day would be like?? thanks a lot!! My first hospital job was in transport. Now I'm an ER Tech/EMT and am finishing nursing school. Hospitals always have opportunities to work up from the ground floor.
You're right, you don't need experience but the job is kinda repetitive. Move a pt to a gurney, bring them to X-ray/CT/MRI then bring them back. All day. But it does give you a chance to interact with many types of people and experience and find out if healthcare is what you really want to do.
Additionally the hours are flexible, pay is decent ($8 when I did it, 6 years ago...) and lots of hospitals have tuition reimbursement if you work part time, which would help with your tuition bills. from what I know you just assist patients with getting to different departments. I'm not sure how much experience you would gain other than figuring out where things are in that specific hospital. If you want to gain experience in a hospital setting and want to work part time i'd highly suggest getting your CNA or Medication aide and doing that. SOME RN programs won't accept you until you've gotten that and worked as one. Getting your CNA or Medication aide doesn't take long and depending on where you live you can make quite a bit doing it.. hope that helps a little bit |
