Lateral knee discomfort just below the patella: what is it?

I have a tender, "weird" feeling in my outer knee. It's kind of on the upper, outer shin... an area lateral to and slightly below my kneecap. I have no swelling, cracking, or severe pain-- it just aches. The only injury I've had has been to the OPPOSITE ankle, so I think something got messed up when I was limping around. I'm also a female with hips on the wider side (if that matters.) What is it? And how should I treat it?

Ice it for 20 min on 20 min off several times a day for 2 days. If it still hunts see a doctor.

Sometimes when you injure on side of your body, you over-compensate as your body tries to stay balanced and then you get a pain on the other side of your body from the stress. Wait a few days, and as your original clears up watch the second place. See if the pain there clears up too. If not, then... doctor.
