Does Parkinson's disease ever go into remission? |
I am 46 and was just diagnosed with Parkinson's disease this year. I am told I am young to get Parkinson's so I'm wondering if it will only progress or if it's possible for it to go into remission or not get worse. My main symptom is a tremor in my left hand and arm. I know what you are going through....I am 51 and was diagnosed with PD two years ago. The doctors (I've seen 3) don't tell you much (at least what to expect). I believe that is because everyone has different symtoms and different degrees of systoms. What I did was to go to the book store and get a book about Parkinson's Disease. It was very informative. Told me what I might be looking at "down the road". Medication can help, although it takes some work to find what will work for you. (I am in that process right now). It is a guessing game for you and the doctors....try until you find something that works for you. Mine is getting progressively worse. Started with my right hand shaking, then it progressed to the entire arm and now my right leg also shakes. Stress makes it worse. I have been in retail for the last 28 years and it is looking like I will probably have to stop working in the not too distant future.....can't keep up the pace. Good luck to you and get as informed as you can. There is an on line group that you can go to that will answer any questions that you may have now or in the future......check on line...... unfortunalty it will probably continue to get worse..however, treatment is available to slow down the symptoms. Parkinsons does not go into remission. You will have good days and bad days though. You are not that young to be getting parkinsons and I am not sure why your doc told you that. Many famous people including Micheal J Fox have it. You sound like your doctor didn't take much time to talk to you about your diagnosis so consider going back in and insisting that he give you more info or refer you to someone who can give you more info. In the meantime go to the parkinsons site online and read all you can. I wish you the best, but unless they come up with a cure I am afraid the answer is no. Good luck, What is the prognosis? The short answer is no. Parkinson does not reverse or go into remission. But your symptoms may be stable for many months. Or at least progression of the disease slowed. |
