Is Parkinson's Disease hereditary?

My great-grandmother had Parkinson's and died when she was 74 in 1990. No one else in my family has had the disease since and I was wondering if it was a hereditary disease.

The short answer is no. Although about 10 per cent of people with Parkinson's disease will have a relative who is also affected, the vast majority do not. You should not worry about having passed the disease on to your children. Like many other diseases, Parkinson's disease is likely to be the result of a complex interaction between both genetic and environmental factors. Make sure that your doctor is aware that someone in your family had this medical condition so that he or she can do the proper tests on you if you become ill.
