Has anyone been operated for parkinson's disease?

Hello
My father has parkinson's and its well...devastating I have heard about the surgery where the implant a device in the brain that helps some people, I would like to see if anyone have gone through this surgery or know someone who does, I have done research , but most people just say about the first month or so, I would like to know if it works on the long run or not. He is a North korea veteran and a great guy it is really hard seen him like this, please if anyone knows anything about the surgery or the condition I will apreciate any feedback on the disease,
Sincerly,
guasabara

I have not personally had it, but I am a Neurologist, a doctor of the brain. While I am not a neurosurgeon, and have not done this procedure myself, I have viewed it done many many times.
The device you are describing is called "deep brain stimulation". Truth be told, it has about a 50% success rate (the symptoms go away 50% of the time).
All in all, it's a wonderful procedure that is actively being researched as well.
If you have any questions, feel free to message me

There are some new surgical treatments for Parkinson's that are experimental and few that are drastic but known to provide some comfort until symptoms progress. As it stands there is no cure and most treatments both medicinal and surgical are geared toward the treatment of symptoms and not the disease itself. The best course of action is to consult with your fathers Neurosurgeon and discuss what options they can provide. If they lack the experience or facilities request a referral to another physician they may be able to offer alternative surgical treatments.
