My Parents Are Worried About My Weight But I Don't Understand Why!?

Hi there!

My mother is worried about my weight and threatening to take me to a doctor, but I don't see why!

I'm male, 14 years old, quite tall for my age, at 5 ft 10, and I weigh 10 stone 9 pounds.

I used to be extremely fat, and to be honest, still view myself as being quite overweight compared to the people at my school.

I have ways of mantaining my weight, although I'd prefer not to explain what they are, and I want to be about a stone lighter by Christmas? There's nothing wrong with that, is there?

My parents seem to think so, and it's driving me crazy, because I don't!

Anyway, I was just wondering how many other people agree with me, or my parents?

Thank you for your comments! x

According to the metric conversion web site I used, you are 140 pounds. Which is a 20.1 BMI, which is perfect. Good range on BMI is 19-24. I would say your weight is fine just where it is. If you lost another stone your BMI would be 18.1 and it would be too low.

Hi Mahogan!
You are what you eat. Over weight is not healthy and it's natural that your mother worries about you. I have no concept of a "stone". But over weight in stones, pounds or kilograms is not good. You should eat healthy and exercise and it will make you a better person. Girls like guys that are physically fit.

if "10 stone" is 100 lbs. then you are skinny. you should gain weight... not fat. work out..you should be like 130 at lest

Well at this point I might be inclined to agree with your parents. First of all you say that you have a way to maintain your weight, but you prefer not to explain what it is. That shows you are hiding something. You might be purging your food or you might be anorexic, who knows but you're secretive about it. You also still view yourself as being overweight, despite the fact that you've lost weight (another sign of an eating disorder). I'm not saying that you have an eating disorder, but you do have some of the signs of someone who does. Please be healthy. If your parents are concerned it is for your well-being. They love you and want what is best for you.

You are OK just lose this stone and ou re perfect...try explain your parents how they make you feel (without laughters, cries, shouting etc.) and they ll understand you. Then tell them you have made a decision ...losing 1 stone
remember losing one pound is good and easy.losing two pounds will be better and easier.

BMI is a way of roughly assessing whether your weight is right for your height, but it is important to take into account your age as well. At the moment you are fine (a bit lighter than average, & definitely not overweight as you suggest above) - although I would worry if you are having to use 'unusual' methods to maintain your weight.
At your age you are still growing and as such should not be aiming to lose weight. For instance if you did lose a stone, and grew by only an inch then by the time you turn 15 you would be down to about the lowest 20% of boys your age and that starts to get serious.
So I guess I'm saying that as a 'snapshot' your weight and height are fine - but your parents are right to worry about you losing more, especially as you view yourself as overweight and are having to use 'ways' to maintain your weight.
