My parents think I have a mental disorder, what should I do? Any advice?

My parents think I have ODD (Oppositional Defiant Disorder). I've been arguing w/ them a lot more then before. It's usually about my grades (i have low grades in language arts and AP Human Geography, but this is my freshman yr & my 1st semster @ a normal high school). I feel like my dad never listens to what i have to say and he always puts words in his and other peoples mouths that he or they didn't actually say. A lot of the time he hears what he wants to. I'm trying to adjust to a new school with over 3700 kids from a county charter school w/ around 200 kids. + i broke up w/ a bf that my parents didn't know about and that i'm still not over, And i'm already going out w/ some1 else, but i think it may be a little too soon. To sum it up somewhat; I'm really stressed and burn out. Can someone plz help me figure out what to do? I don't think I have ODD, but I'm not sure, mom's a LPN(licensed practical nurse) in school to be an RN(registered nurse) & dad's a firefighter. r they right?

I dont think anything is wrong with you you are just going through a rough time just try and take care of yourself do what you need to do for yourself. If your parents are making you feel bad just know that they arent doing it on purpose they want to help. But listen to your gut and do what u can to become more independent of them so you won't have to worry about their opinion so much . Take care God bless

It's hard to say but they are your parents and know you well and presumably have your best interests at heart. You could talk this over with a counselor. Also, you could talk to a professional. You have nothing to lose by doing that.

Neither one is a therapist.

Sometimes parents don't really listen to their kids - just talk to them . You are young and need to concentrate on your school work. It is hard going to a new school and not having your old friends once you adjust it will be better. Just try to maintain your cool. I know as I am a parent and I am guilty of just talking to my kids and really not listening to what they are trying to tell me. Good Luck. Keep Your Chin up all of this will work out.

Your parents (mother especially, as she is a nurse) needs to be careful because, if she feels you might be ill, she should have taken you to a doctor. To have not done that is child neglect. How does she expect you to get better? Personally, I don't believe she's sincere in what she's said to you.

Certainly in the UK it is illegal for a parent to treat/diagnose their child. Regardless of her qualifications, potentially what she has done (labeled you) is child abuse - it's a psychological kick in the teeth?

It is normal for kids and their parents to have disagreements.

It is normal for kids to have poor grades (few of us are good at everything). What do you think is the problem for those subjects? Sub-standard teaching? You simply need extra classes? Or (being honest with yourself) are you indeed being 'awkward', or lazy?

I'm sorry to hear you're frustrated by you father's bad manners. Maybe he's impatient because he's stressed out from his stressful job. Maybe family counselling is in order, to help you have a constructive, controlled conversation rather than you all firing off at each other. Perhaps your school/doctor can arrange this.
