My parents won't let me take my ADD medication?

My pshyciatrist just physcribed medication for ADD for me.
But my parents won't let me take it because
of the side effect which reads "Slowing of growth in hieght/wieght of children."

I'm already short, and I already grow slow, so what's
that going to make a difference? I have been waiting
years now to grow up to 5'0 and still havn't.
But my parents are all like, "Your deffinataly not taking this!"

But what about my ADD?
I really need the help in school.

They have to let you take it because you really need it. Why did they take you to the psychiatrist and accept the prescription if they have these concerns?? Do you know where the medicine is? Some people like to take the meds because it will give you energy if you dont have ADD. I am not accusing them of anything, but if they got the script filled, and you dont know where your medicine is, then who knows?? You should talk to your Doctor, or a school counselor because you really need to be taking your medicine. Remember, the Psychiatrist diagnosed you and decided on the best treatment for you and if your parents dont comply, it may be considered neglect.

Even the 'common' side effects are generally quite rare so the chances of the meds stunting your growth significantly are slim.Perhaps there are other ADD meds that don't have that side effect?Your psychologist would know if there are any others suitable for you. Report It

You need to study the problem for about ... say... in your case.... 15 seconds! Go see a school counselor

If you're willing to accept the possible side effects what's the problem. You need proper education. Will they support you in your adult years? Talk to your school councilor or your private one and let them know about this.My mother was under 5' and was very successful in her career, but she would've never got there without good schooling.

Your parents are concerned about doctors habits of over medicating children and rightfully so. Research other ways of fixing ADD than pills. I'm sure there are some now. if you haven't tried this you have no guarantee that the pills will help.

I'm sure your parents are calling the psychiatrist to see what else you could take or do to help, right? If not, please speak with a school counselor so they can possibly come up with a better idea for what to do. Your parents must have taken you to the psychiatrist for a reason and they have to give explanations for reasons why they refuse the help before sending you back. Don't go telling them what I said in those words, but please do keep those words in mind so you may form an opinion that will enable you to best speak with your parents and anyone else who may need to step in. No matter what happens in the end though, the main thing is you continue getting some form of help in school, and with your concentration and critical thinking skills in general. Good luck.

what else have they done to help you in school?
they said my son had add,,when actually it was his thyroid,,do they help you with the work you don't understand? or is it you just can't sit still long enough to actually do the work?
WAY-BACK before medicines were available for this ,,they used a teaspoon of coffee,,

i think you should search ADD and find information on dealing with it without the medication. because right now you cant take it if your parents wont allow you to so until you are old enough to go get yourself prescribed then you should consider finding ways to cope without the medicine. i am extremely ADD and i was on the meds and i became addicted when i was 15 and it caused me to have major heart problems, so i have been teaching myself to cope with it without meds/.. good luck hun

You need to get another adult involved, such as your psychiatrist, a teacher or school counselor. Now, your parents could have some legitimate concerns about the medicine, and I agree with one poster that psychotropic drugs are overprescribed. That said, perhaps this is the best form of therapy for you, and there is nothing wrong with that. But maybe your parents want to explore other options. But that involves a long talk with your doctors and/or school -- and another adult needs to speerhead this.

Ask your parents to call your doctor to prescribe something to
help you that won't have growth side effects. If they won't,
call him yourself, as a last resort, and let him know what's
happening. They (your parents) care about you, and want
what's best for your health. There might be more than one side effect to this med. that makes them worry.
My daughter went to a doctor once and he prescribed a pill
that had to be taken continually, and then weened off of,
and the know side effect was cataracts or blindness. She was only 14 years old! I weened her off of them almost
as soon as she started taking them!

There is another approach to ADD.The natural approach.Try taking a good vitamin and mineral suppliment.Essential fatty acids are essential for proper brain development.Ginko biloba and DMG help get blood flowing to the brain and increase brain function.Try a diet free of processed foods.Nothing artificial. You may need to be detoxed, heavy metal s are probably affecting your ability to learn.Check out the bookPerscriptionFor Nutritional Healing.Does anyone know the long term affects of these drugs on growing children? What will taking these drugs over a life time do to you?
