What are the specimens to diagnose parasitic disease? |
What are the specimens to diagnose parasitic disease? Depends on the type of parasite. A complete blood count (cbc) will show if there is an elevated number of eosinophils. Eosinophils are part of the granulocytic (white blood cells) line that usually increases in response to parasitic infestation. Intestinal parasites can be diagnosed by fecal specimens. Some may require biopsy and/or duodenal lavage. Blood parasites can be seen using blood smears. They require special staining. There are numerous serological tests that measure varying degrees of immune resonse. So, the specimens are highly variable, depending on the type of parasite and the area of the body infected. Stool specimens. Also Blood Drawn for a Complete Blood Count (CBC) will usually show a marked increase in Eosionphils in the White Blood Count Differential. |
