What causes sleep paralysis and night terrors? |
I'm 16, and completely healthy and normal in all other regards, but for the last several years (since I was about 8 or 9) I've experienced sleep paralysis and night terrors, at the rate of about 1 or 2 times a month for the paralysis and more often for night terrors. Does anyone know what causes this? Sleep paralysis is closely related to the paralysis that occurs as a natural part of REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, which is known as REM atonia. Sleep paralysis occurs when the brain awakes from a REM state, but the bodily paralysis persists. This leaves the person fully aware, but unable to move. In addition, the state may be accompanied by hypnagogic hallucinations. (strange shapes, faces, ect.) |
