What does Infantile paralysis mean? |
Need to know for a project on Betty Cavanna who had Infantile paralysis as a child. Thank you berry much! Infantile paralysis (polio): Infantile paralysis is an old synonym for poliomyelitis, an acute and sometimes devastating viral disease. Man is the only natural host for poliovirus. The virus enters the mouth and multiplies in lymphoid tissues in the pharynx and intestine. Small numbers of virus enter the blood and go to other sites where the virus multiplies more extensively. Another round of viremia (virus in the bloodstream) leads to invasion of the central nervous system (CNS), the spinal cord and brain, the only sites seriously struck by the virus. That was the common name given to polio in the 1930s and 1940s. In the early 1950s Dr. Jonas Salk perfected a vaccine which effectively wiped out the disease. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infantile_p... the best i could find is infantile paralysis is polio. i found a list of articles on it at the pubmed website here is the link hope it helps. |
