Does Panic disorder ever go away? If so How?

About 4 months ago I was diagnosed with Panic disorder, and I have been on and off of different medications. The only one that worked was Xanax but now I am pregnant and cannot take that. The OB gave me Atarax which makes me feel like crap, I do not know what to do? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I had panic disorder and generalized anxiety disorder. My panic disorder disappeared as I got older. But my anxiety disorder I still have, and take meds for it, and I'm doing great on them.

I have the same thing and am on both Prozac and xanex. Since you are pregnant, the best thing to do if to try to avoid situations that cause your panic attacks. That's what I had to do every time I got pregnant. It's not easy, but do the best you can.

You can learn to control it. I am entirely off medications for panic and anxiety. It takes learning how to control yourself and your selftalk; and getting used to exposure to those things that panic you.
Although you will not catch me in a large city without a new prescription.

Since you are pregnant, I cannot recommend any medicines as they may harm you. There are a few home remedies for panic disorders.
Have you tried Hypnotherapy? It works. What you need is relaxed mind and body.

Try these:
Get plenty of rest and sleep. A refreshed body can deal better with the tensions and burdens of life.

Deep-breathing exercises help to oxygenate and relax the body.

Daily exercise is one of the most potent treatment for anxiety symptoms. Exercise outdoors. Hiking, walking and swimming are the best antidotes for anxiety and tension. Participate in an active sports you enjoy.

Avoid foods containing refined sugar or other simple carbohydrates. For a nutritional treatment plan to have maximum benefits, avoid simple sugars, carbonated soft drinks, tobacco, or alcohol.

Include in the diet apricots, asparagus, avocados, bananas, broccoli, blackstrap molasses, brewer's yeast, brown rice, dried fruits, dulse, figs, fish (especially salmon), garlic, green leafy vegetables, legumes, raw nuts and seeds, soy products, whole grains, and yogurt. These foods supply valuable minerals such as calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and potassium, which are depleted by stress.

Try eating small, frequent meals rather than the traditional three meals a day.

Magnesium supplements are useful, especially if you suffer from muscle spasms.

Limit your intake of animal protein. Concentrate on meals high in complex carbohydrates and vegetable protein.

Take relaxing warm baths before going to sleep.

Massage with deep thumb pressure along both sides of the spine in an upward and outward motion.

Dry skin-brushing provides an invigorating feeling and helps rid the body of toxins, which contribute to tenseness and anxious feelings.

Avoid alcohol, coffee and sugar or soft drinks that has caffeine.

Avoid, as far as possible, the activities you find less relaxing.

Be sure to get adequate rest.

The genital cold-water rub is applied for general detoxification and helps relieve anxiety. Sit on a narrow board that is placed over a tub filled with 50 deg F (12 deg C) water, with feet in the water. Soak a cotton cloth in the water and gently rub over the genitals. Continue for ten minutes, then dry genital area well and rest for one hour in bed.

Learn a relaxation technique and practice it.

Simplify your life by making your schedule less hectic.

Call a trusted friend or family member. Talking things over can diffuse anxiety.

Try RESCUE REMEDY - mothertincture - 2 drops on the tongue - twice a day for 1 month.
It is a BACH FLOWER remedy and has absolutely no side effects. Very very safe.

You need to go to the library and take out some self-help books--in addition to getting some counseling. You can also read up on panic disorder at:

type panic in their search box in the upper right corner. They have anonymous quizzes, causes, symptoms, treatments, etc. Good luck with your pregnancy and childbirth :)

Well... i had a little panic attack but the best advice that i can give you is ---to always DISTRACT yourself---when feeling afraid. It has really worked for me. Good Luck!

No.. but good news is you can stop it before starts and eventually may go for months without an attack. I too am a sufferer of anxiety and full blown panic attacks after an bad reaction to an antidepressant med, so bad I could not get out of bed. My husband ordered a program off of Midwest Anxiety and Depression Center. I would play Cds while going out for walks. I got off sugary items for awhile till I could get it under control. No O.J.
I learned what triggers it and how to control it. I now have my life back. I will take 1/4 of a 1 mg. Lorazpam tablet to take the edge off if absolutely needed to help control it before it gets full blown. I really hardly ever have to do this now. The program teaches you how to control it before it controls you. You must gain control of it naturally because all the meds do is help cover up the symptoms which eventually your body will not respond to the drugs anymore.
Note-sugar triggers attacks like orange juice. Exercise, take walks, you feel it flairing up inside, stop what your doing and start walking put your mindset in a place on a beach, feel the wind, hear the ocean, listen to soft soothing music, your not dying.
It's a chemical your brain releases normally when you are in a situation that you would have to fight or run. In this case it it is misfiring, but you can control that the more you practice catching it before it gets out of control. If you find your breathing is getting faster and harder grab a brown lunch bag and breathe into it. If your heart is racing breathe slower deep breaths and release. Do something walk around spend time with a pet if you have one, get your mindset off the attack onto something else. You will be fine it will pass.
I thought I was dying with uncontrollable attacks every 1-2 mins apart waking up from sleep in a panic mode ,throat closing up,dizzy, heart pounding, BP high, cold sweaty palms & feet. Check out the Midwest Center Program online. It is cheeper in the long run for the program and specially formulated nutrients are also offered, but ask them since you are pregnant they have a phone number. I can't tell you enough how this really helped me.

God Bless

I do feel for you, and even though it doesn't go away it most definately can be controlled before it becomes a panic attack.

I used to have panic attacks and ive been on Prozac. im pregnant too and my psychiatrist said that prozac does not harm your baby at all. in fact, having panic attacks can put stress on the baby, so it's actually BEST if i take prozac.
