Project for psychology class on Panic Disorder?

As part of a project, I am taking a survey to help determine the number of laypersons who believe Panic Disorder is biologically derived vs. those who think it is psychological. Thanks

Both. I think Generalized Panic Disorders are biological because they can rarely be controlled without medication. They are caused by a chemical imbalance. Phobias, however, are phychological because they are ingrained fears that can be cured with therapy.

I think you will need to fully explain to the people you are surveying what exactly a panic disorder is, what the difference is between biologically and psychologically induced panic disorders and then ask what they think based on that explanation. Make sure you are not biased in your explanation in anyway, because that will taint the responses you are given.

i think it is a psychlogical condition, however some people may be biological predisposed to it.

biological, While it is a pschological disease and has the output of mental. I developed it going through severe stress. This stress had to change my chemical balance to enable me to go through the awful things I did. If that wasn't enough the doctors giving me antidepressants also changed my chemistry to allow the panic disorders. Normally I never have these but during the extreme stress created by divorce I got them.

As far as i know, "A biochemical cause is suggested, in which there are abnormalities in neurotransmitters (chemical messengers in the brain) that trigger an inappropriate response to danger.
"It has also been suggested that the individual may have learned inappropriate responses to the physiological symptoms of anxiety. For example, interpreting normal feelings of anxiety as critical or disastrous."
From a personal point of view, a former girlfriend was subject bouts of 'Panic Disorder.' an otherwise brilliant young woman she was unable to process appropriate response to normal anxiety. I think it all stemed from a catastrophic incident from childhood in which she was stranded at home alone when an intense hurricane hit. as an adult she had never learned to deal with certain things.

I think it is totally physiological, if you believe something or someone of higher education tells you something, true or not, things start to have an effect on you.

It is psycological and later it disturbs the chemistry and becomes biological which is depression.

i have a panic disorder its psychological

Psychological. I have had Panic Disorder for about five years now. The ONLY way to "cure" this disorder is through cognitive therapy. However, panic attacks can be avoided by taking anti-depressants.

Basically, I would say it's 97% psychological and 3% biological. Women are more likely to get it than men and it can sometimes run in the family.

On the subject of someone with a higher education telling you something is right...that's true. Luckily, I went to a psychologist before I went to a doctor. Psychologists, therapists, etc. understand that Panic Disorder is only defeated through intensive therapy. On the other hand, my doctor was quick to presribe anti-depressants and that was it. She provided no other options. She just wanted to drug me up forever.
