Pancreatic Cancer Question?

My sister was diagnosed with stage 3..... she had the whipple on the 20th of this month and is still in the hospital. they gave her solid foods yesterday, but she cannot keep the food down. I understand why from all my searches, but my question is she said they will release her tomorrow... Can they release her when she cannot keep the food down... (she will be staying with me) and I need to know what to do.... I thought they would put her in a re hab until her body could process the food, but apparently I am wrong.... Has anyone experienced this and any info on the cancer, whipple and life span would be greatly appreaciated. Thank you.

My father was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer on July 20th and they said it was the size of a basketball. He just died this past Sunday on July 29th. Pancreatic cancer in a word sucks. We have had many visitors relating their experience with this cancer and many have said they usually die within 3 weeks after diagnosis, this being without the whipple procedure though. I'll keep you in my prayers.

No one can say for sure what exactly is going on or how long she will live, but pancreatic cancer is known to be very quick. Talk to her doctors and her nurses, see if hospice care is available, it is invaluable for caring for terminal patients.
See if you can at least get a visiting nurse to come in.
Talk to the resource manager at the hospital your sister is in for other kinds of help.
Good luck to both of you.

Can they release her? yes
Is it a good idea? probably not
It is usually a decision based on the almighty dollar not the patient.
Survival after pancreatic cancer is rare. They may be sending her home to spend a little time before her life ends. Wouldn't that make her happier than dying in a hospital or nursing home?

I had a neighbor who died of panceratic cancer, and unfortunatly for you and your sister, it is the most deadly form of cancer, often because it is diagnosed very late. I don't recall how long he lived after he was diagnosed, but I remember that it wasn't very long. I am sorry that I can't give you better news. I will kee you and your sister in my prayers.

It might be best for you to contact patients or their caregivers who are dealing with this disease. They are better informed and can provide guidance on what to do. People on these mailing lists usually respond quickly to your inquiries:

Pancreatic cancer is usually diagnosed late stage because symptoms do not show up until the cancer has grown. Life expectancy can be as short as 6 months.

A whipple is an extensive "re plumbing" of the digestive system. She probably willl have nutrition issues for the rest of her life. Malnutrition as a major problem. Get in touch with the hospital dietitian {ask a nurse on your sister's unit to set it up, asap} They will help you put together a diet for your sister. I know it will be very small, yet frequent meals as tolerated.

She will need a home health care. Hospice may also be an option. Don't wait to start this process, it can take a while to set it up. I lost my father in law to Pancreatic cancer. It is a difficult process. I wish you luck and my heart felt prayers
