Pancreatic cancer? Is it possible to cure stage IV pancreatic cancer?

My uncle has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer found in liver, pancreas and lungs, but his oncologist told him that he can "cure" it within six months using chemotherapy. Is this true?

STAGE IV means just before terminal position and in my opinion cure may not be possible at all. If your doctor is assuring cure in 6 months, then there is nothing like that and you have to go with his word and treatments. But a patient with chemotherapy of 6 month, living there after is also have a remote possibility.

The prognosis of Pancreatic cancer is that Patients diagnosed with pancreatic cancer typically have a poor prognosis partly because the cancer usually causes no symptoms early on, leading to metastatic disease at time of diagnosis. Median survival from diagnosis is around 3 to 6 months; 5-year survival is much less than 5% With 32,180 new diagnoses in the United States every year, and 31,800 deaths, mortality approaches 99%, giving pancreatic cancer the #1 fatality rate of all cancers and the #4 cancer killer in the United States amongst both men and women.

Any way please try as nothing is in our hands. Best of luck-

There is no way to know if his doc can cure him for sure. I would hope he gets a second opinon. Check out the website www.tomotherapy.com

Depends on the type of pancreatic cancer. Unfortunately, the most common type of pancreatic cancer, pancreatic adenocarcinoma doesn't present with early symptoms and it's very aggressive. Usually, it's discovered late and for this reason, less than 5% of patients survive 5 years after the diagnosis.

It's possible that your uncle has a pancreatic cancer other than pancreatic adenocarcinoma or it's possible that he misunderstood the doctor or it's possible that he's telling a lie to family members to keep them from worrying.

No, I don't believe that it can be cured. I was told that stage IV is the latest stage and since you say it has metastasized to his lungs and liver as well, I think they are just trying to give him hope, even if it is false. When cancer spreads to vital organs, you would need them to be transplanted with new organs, but thats an unlikely possibility with the progression of this disease. Some people believe in faith in God healing them, but I have a tendency to believe modern medicine more than that and I would have faith in that. I am sorry for your uncle, maybe they told him that so he wouldn't just give up right now, but they are, in my opinion, giving him false hope. I'm sorry for your uncle and your family. You have my thoughts and prayers鈾?/div>

Unfortunately, if your uncle's cancer began in the pancreas and spread to the liver and lungs, the oncologist was way wrong.
Metastatic pancreatic cancer (cancer that has spread) cannot be cured and generally does not reaspond well to chemotherapy. Treatment may help improve the quality of life and extend the life span a little, but it will not cure it. Chemotherapy with gemcitabine is the standard treatment for Stage 4 pancreatic cancer. Other drugs (Xeloda, Eloxatin, Tarceva) may help shrink the tumor and extend the life expectancy somewhat, but there is still ongoing debate about how effective those drugs are.
The typical life expectancy for a patient with pancreatic cancer that has spread to the liver is about 4-6 months.
I'm sorry to hear about your uncle.

I'm no doctor but I would say no. My dad was in the hospital for a week with the doctors saying they didn't know what he had. Finally after he saw a crap load of different doctors they sent him home and told him he had pancreatic cancer, he died a week later. My feeling is they knew right away but wanted to milk as much money out of us so the doctors could go on nice vacations and drive expensive cars. Pricks. We would rather have had the truth instead of sugarcoating it so he would have spent more time at home in his final days instead of 2 hours away. It's all about the almighty dollar when it comes to doctors, but that's just my opinion from experience. Sorry for your bad news, best of luck.

You can not "cure" pancreatic cancer with chemo. You prolong his life. My father has it (had to have half of his pancreas removed). Thru surgery, chemo and radiation he has lived past 1 yr. At the Oklahoma Health Center we have a support group for this disease that meets once a month. We have survivors of 5+ yrs of this rotten odd ball thrown at us and we all share what has helped to keep our loved ones with us and what has helped to keep us get thru this ordeal.

The doctor is lying to you. If your Uncle has it in his liver and lungs besides the pancreas, it has spread. The best thing to do is, suck up your gut, take a very deep breath, and face facts. It feels terrible to type that but I feel it is better to face the truth than face denial. I am grateful that my 76 yr old father has made it 1 yr. I realize he will not make it another. We have had much younger people and their families in the support meetings.

Enjoy the time you have left together. Get him to tell you everything about his childhood and growing up in an earlier generation so that history can be passed on.

Please remember that we are here to support you at this time, and God is with him.

No, I don't think that was true. The oncologist should not have said this if he did.
