End Stage Pancreatic Cancer? |
My grandmother has end stage pancreatic cancer. As of earlier this week she is no longer being given food or water and is being kept comfortable for the duration of her life. How long can we expect her to linger like this? Hospice is telling us it could be hours or days. It can be about 5-14 days, normally about a week. Hospice should have provided you with a pamplet on the final stages of life and their signs. My mom passed after 5 days without food or water. After the fish-out-of-water breathing began is was about 5 hours. It's very sad, and very hard for everyone. I'm really sorry about your grandmother, when my grandmother got to this stage, she was alive for about a week, she ended up dying in her sleep. Take care. My heart is with you and your family, unfortunately, we on earth are unable to pinpoint when our time to pass on will be. My experience is to listen to Hospice, keep her comfortable, and say your goodbyes. the hospice workers are familiar with the end of life care - i think that they are guiding you correctly.. She is so fortunate to have such a wonderful family by her side. The hospice nurses have so much experience with this and they are very open and honest so if they say hours or days that is the truth. Pancreatic Cancer in its end stages is very fast. Only God knows when she will pass and I am sure the hospice is making sure she gets adequate pain medicine. Bless you and your family. Im so sorry. This time can be so painful for family to watch. My father lasted about about a week and we were swabbing his mouth with those little green mouth swabs just to keep his mouth from totally drying out.Try to be as invovled as you can you will feel better when its over that you helped out.Even if all you do is help others in her care or do chores to help out.I spent time holding Dads hand and helping my mom turn him even though I was terrified and he didnt know I was there.I remember When I had gone home to wash clothes and get some rest when I came back my sister told me he had passed and I was so releived I think I actually thanked God because nobody wants to see a loved one linger like that.I will pray for you. If Hospice is involved, she is getting palliative care. She'll go when she's ready. My mom passed from end stage pancreatic cancer after 6 months of fighting hard to live. How long did the Dr give her to live? They told my mom about 6 months and that's how long she lived. Hospice is right it could be hours or days. All I can say is keep telling her all the happy stories that you had with her and let her know you love her and if she feels like its time to go you will do alright without her she has your permission. Or at least that's what I done. I still miss her terribly but I know she's at peace now |
