Painkillers for Wisdom Teeth? |
I've noticed that my wisdom teeth are just now coming in, and I was wanting to know will painkillers(advil, aleve, etc.) help relieve the pain? Its uncomfortable for me to chew, etc...Thanks for the help. If you wait too long, infection can occur. It can also injury opposing teeth which will cause greater damage (plus increase the cost for treatment). In the meantime, Vicodin is what they give after oral surgery to reduce the pain. Advil can help, but it can be harsh on your stomach. Go see a dentist, please. I am a dentist. Over the counter medicines I would recommend advil 600-800mg (that's 3-4 tablets of 200mg each) every 6 hours as needed for pain. (maximum you can have in one day is 3200 mg. Having 600-800 mg is preferable to 200-400 mg because of it's anti-inflammatory effect. Don't take advil if you have stomach problems and don't take on empty stomach. You probably have pericornitis and it is when the wisdom tooth starts to erupt and the gum around the area gets inflammed with the are getting hit by the opposing tooth. You need to see a dentist or an oral surgeon to get your wisdom teeth out ASAP. You can have them taken out at any age if they are bothering you. The best time to take out wisdom teeth is between 17-21 while the bone is still soft and you have less complications. Avoid chewing on that side in the meantime but you don't want to do this long term, it could lead to jaw problems. See a dentist! Advil, Motrin, Aspirin, Aleve are from the same family and have similar mechanisms of action. Aleve is longer acting, but Ibuprofen (motrin, advil) have been shown through scientific studies to be the best over-the-counter medication for dental pain. advil works really great. in about 1/2 hour, but it sounds like you should have them removed because they can cause other problems. |
