Is it bad to take painkillers before working out?

I don't for a few reasons.

1. I would be concerned that it would mask pain that tells me I'm injuring something.

2. There have been studies showing that it changes absorption in the intestine allowing some things through that normally wouldn't pass

3. There have been a couple of studies linking it to kidney failure during extreme exercise. Not all that conclusive, but if you don't have to, why take a chance.

No, as long as it only advil.

Maybe. If you are injured, you risk further aggravating the injury. Never continue to exercise if there is an injury. The workout becomes counter productive at that point.

And if you are not injured, then painkillers are more of a recreational thing, right? They are hard on the liver and kidneys, so don't take them unless you need to.

It amazes me how some fitness buffs only care about muscle, but could care less what happens to their internal organs. Unless those are healthy, you're in for trouble.

EDIT: If you are recovering from an injury, just make sure to take it easy. The point is that you don't want it to become a chronic injury. That means it never goes away. Ever. Save the painkillers for after.

Advil is an anti inflammatory, and great for sport injuries, sprains, strains and the like.

If your pain continues, see a doctor. Most times, only an X-ray can conclude if an injury is a sprain or a fracture.
