What are the negative side effects of painkillers?

I have been described a heavy dose of oxycodone (Percocet) and loritabs that I have been taking at the correct dosage as prescribed by my doctor. I was originally on morphine for my accident also. After 5 weeks of basically eating painkillers like candy I am curious to know if I am looking at long term ramifications of this (can't get in touch with my doctor, vacation, and was curious if anyone had an idea).

I'm on MScontin and Fiorinal w/codeine. Most negative side effect is definitely constipation. Also short memory span, and I don't feel real confident driving, and I'm on the least amount possible to help my pain. (Optic neuralgia-it's a long story.) It says possible dizziness, fainting, drowsiness, weight gain, weight loss, (really!) blurred vision, tiredness. They pretty much cover everything, but for me it's just the dreaded constipation. I'll continue:anxiety disorders, nausea, sweating , yawning, weakness, and it goes on and on. I don't think there are long term ramifications, if you mean you will eventually stop them. If you have more questions, e-mail me. I've been on them over 10 years, and my balance isn't great. But I'm on Oxygen too (for pulminary fibrosis), which has nothing to do with the chronic pain. Come to think of it, I do have a lot of anxiety problems too, but they're not from the pain pills. Wow! I sound like a real doozie, don't I? I'm just going with the flow. I suggest you call your pharmacist with these types of questions. Call late at night or early in the morning when he/she is not busy. I have come to learn that pharmacists know a lot more about meds than most doctors. Good luck to you, my friend. I hope you get back to 100%. :)

Im a 42 yr old construction worker, and i can tell you first hand that painkillers are highly addictive if not closely monitored by a pain specialist. ive seen alot of close friends get addicted because they abused them. talk to your doc as soon as possible about alternatives and pain management specialists.

You really shouldn't be on painkillers unsupervised. I'm surprised any doctor would allow that . . . the most important long term ramification that I can think of is addiction. Pain killers are narcotics and are highly addictive, so be careful.

the only thing i can think of is that you get addicted to them

Can be very addicting and bad for your liver. VIcodin was my friend.

hi there............well i have been on pain meds since last Aug due to an accident. i have been on oxy, musclerelaxers and antiinflamatory meds. the first 6 months i took them as the doc ordered, now i only take when needed. you have to slowly take yourself off them if you can. long term effects are liver and kidney damage and addiction. talk with your doctor and explain your thoughts to him or her. you also might want some blood work done to see if you have any problems with your organs. good luck to you...... :) talk to you soon.

Painkillers such as aspirin and others in large amounts are likely to be bad for your kidneys.
