At what point is a person considered addicted to painkillers/opiates?

Just asking... specifically painkillers and vicodin, etc.

Especially "when are they past taking them for recreation and have a real problem?"

the first clue is when a person takes them without a prescription. the second clue is a person needs them everyday just to function. where i work the saying goes that if you can't live without or it interferes with your normal routine you are addicted

When they cannot leave the house without them or constantly takes them, and takes more then they need to too often.

when they are incorperated inthe everyday life of the person, when the need turns to want, when the person gets anxious, upset or rageful without the medication.
