Do prescription pain relievers really expire?

I know there is an expiration date, what happens when they expire? are they just not as potent or harmful?

Usually doesn't matter if they've gone beyond the expiration by a little bit - if they have been kept in a cool dry place.

Some meds could cause harm if they're real old, and others could lose some of their potency.

The dates the pharmacy puts on pills is usually 1 year after the day you get them. The bottle that they got them from might say they don't expire till 2010. Ask pharmacist next time what the bottle he's getting them from says.

The answer to the question is Yes. Prescription pain relievers really do expire. What happens is at a certain point they become less effective not poisonis neccesarally more along the lines of less effective. It is best that any meds that are expired are thrown out or discussed with your doctor. Even the advice I am giving you should always be double checked with your doctor as I am not your doctor but a nurse.

Most drugs loose their effectiveness over time. It's best to dispose of drugs that are way past their expiration dates.
