Are pain relievers bad or the kidneys ?

Are pain relievers bad or the kidneys ?

If you take Tylenol in large amounts and take it daily, then yes. But as another answerer said, always drink plenty of fluids to flush the kidneys and help get rid of poisons and impurities. Acetominophen, when used as directed, is a great pain reliever and will not cause damage. Anything you overdo can hurt you. Even aspirin, which has been around for years can hurt if you overdo it.

yes TYLENOL..... read up about it.... please it will change what you take for a headache forever....any thing that has acetaminophen in it will slowly destroy your kidneys....

Much depends on what type of pain killer you are taking and the amount of fluid you have in a day. Think about it, you take the drug to relieve the symptom and then you need to 'flush' the drug from your system. As long as you have the 8 liters of fluid a day, then the kidneys will be flushed.

Unlike what some people have said, acetaminophen overuse/abuse is dangerous for the liver. My mother has kidney disease and the doctor who treats it has her on oxycodone/acetaminophen combination. He has informed her she can take things like acetaminophen (commonly known as tylenol) and ibuprofen.

I am amazed at the answers I see. My Kidney doctor prescribes Hydrocodone/amcetaminophen for pain and forbids Ibuprofen. I can also take gabapentin for nerve pain. My understanding is that all pain relievers are bad for both the kidneys and the liver. If you are in otherwise good health your body is able to eliminate these drugs. But if your body is compromised you may do more damage than can be adequately repaired.

If you have any reason to suspect your kidneys are not in good condition, I recommend you ask a doctor which is best for you. Be cautious that a GP tried to give me Ibuprofen for pain once but I knew better. When I told my kidney doctor about it he said he would call him.
