Chest Pain---- anxiety related??? PLease help?

Hi im a 17 year old male, with good overall health. i just had a physical about a month a go and everything is good. I am currently in grade 12. In january i was having some chest pains/palpulations and i went to the emergency room and they did the EKG, blood tests and an x ray and everything turned out fine. They said it was just stress/anxiety causing my chest pains. they told me to take some advil and it should go away. I did and it went away, however now im having chest pains again. they have lasted for about 3 days ( they are pretty mild pain) on the left side but sometimes it moves to the middle. i think it is just the anxiety because i have exams coming up in a week and im all worried about the results.

Do you think this is just anxiety causing this ( i also got headaches a lot in january) overall i am a really anxious person even the doctor said it and i worry about everything.

I just think that if i worry about it it will get worse, and if im not thinking about it i dont really feel it as much

Sounds like stress and anxiety to me. Maybe you could try some type of relaxation exercises. There are all sorts of relaxation tapes you can purchase to listen to. Perhaps Yoga? When you start to worry excessively, try listening to some upbeat or soft music to distract your mind. Exercise can also be very helpful to relieve stress. Work that stress away on a tread mill, lifting weights, aerobic exercise etc. Exercising regularly might also help with your headaches. These are things that have helped me to deal with stress and anxiety. Hope I have been of some help.

I used to suffer from anxiety as well, and I found that if began to worry about something I too would get really bad chest pain to the point where I had EKG's done too. The put me on Paxil then Effexor. The Effexor worked miracles then the pains went away. Good luck!

i used to have that i would almost pass out . but u got to unwind and take a deep breath after ur done with the stress inducing activity relax and let it all out cause bottling up all the stress makes anxiety attacks happen more frequently.

I'm going to say you are having a bout with anxiety attacks which can feel like you are about to die. No kidding!
Even in the mild form, anxiety attacks feel like you are going to have a heart attack and make you feel stressed and sometimes, at their worst, as if you're about to die.
When you feel the symptoms coming on...if you don't want to take xanax (RX from your doctor and can make you sleepy),
go lay down flat on your stomach on your bed, face in your pillow, with a fan turned slightly on in your direction. Breathe slowly and emtpy your head free of any thoughts other than just relaxing. Within a few minutes, you'll feel better and the pains will go away.

You may ask your doctor for further heart tests as a precaution. Sometimes EKGs don't always reveal everything going on with the heart. Hope you feel better!

I have anxiety as well. i worry about everything. I can't stand it. People like us will notice every little thing wrong, an itch a slight pain ...anything. I'm sorry. I worried myself into a rash last week. Just takes some slow, deep breaths and try to relax your mind. Try to visualize in your mind your favorite place. And enjoy it as long as you can. if you start to get anxious again. Just keep breathing and make yourself go back to that warm feeling. I know where you are in this. You will be okay. This is just a suck anxiety attack and you will learn what triggers it and you'll be able to stop them within a few minutes. Good Luck

Chest pain can most definitely be caused by anxiety. Chest pain comes from different things. It could be something you eat and you get heart burn, you could become overly anxious and hyperventilate or breathe shallow and not be getting enough oxygen to your lungs and this can cause chest pain. I work in an ER and see chest pain patients all the time. They come in with chest pain and it is related to different issues. If you are that worried about it, ask for a referral to a cardiologist.

Chest pains can be caused from a lot of sources so lets go over the most frequent ones.

Let me start with your family history - Are you parents alive and have they or any of their relatives have heart attacks. If they have then we should research your chest pain further with another EKG and possibly a stress test.

Did the chest pain relate to physical exercise at all. For example I used to play racquet's ball and after some of the games I would have severe chest pain and it was caused by a pinched nerve in the neck.

If the chest pain goes away with the use of 5mg of Valium then it is stress related or nerve or muscle related. If the chest pain goes away after using nitroglycerin under your tongue then you have a cardiovascular problem and you will need to have some serious intervention. You are generally considered too young for heart problems but you may have some thing serious if the nitro works for you.

If it is just worry then use cognitive therapy approaches. That is where you will the pain to go away by having your mind drive it away. If you ever are hooked up to a continuous heart monitoring device you can make you heart slow up or speed up and you can raise or lower you blood pressure by thinking it and telling your body to follow you instructions.

I do it all the time.

Try some of my ideas - I am 62 and have a family history of heart disease and had a mild heart attack last year even though I have been taking every preventive measure I could.

Hope I have help you some
