Is there a newly found breast cancer called Paget's Disease? Paget's disease of the breast, discovered in 1874, is a rare form of breast cancer. This type of breast cancer starts in the breast ducts and extends to the skin of the nipple and to the dark circle of skin (areola) around the nipple. Paget's disease of the breast isn't related to Paget's disease of the bone, which is a metabolic bone disease. \This is not a new cancer. Actually, I learned about it when I was studying breast disease in college around 1992-1993. It is relatively rare. It causes problems with the nipple mainly and most women think it is a skin problem, like a rash. Therefore, many women forgo medical early medical attention. |
