PTSD and having to fight really hard to avoid alcohol?

I have PTSD and lately i'm finding myself wanting to drink and use illegal drugs to help deal with it. I was diagnosed almost 4 yrs ago after a sexual assault and have suffered 2 more traumas in the past year. I am currently on lexapro 20 mg daily and xanax 0.5 3 times daily. I have a parole hearing to attend in a few days for one of the traumas and i'm at a loss here. My family and friends are scared to leave me alone for any length of time due to fearing i'll harm myself in some way. Please help me out here. I have a dr apt in the morning and need some advice on how to get him to listen up before i do turn to the alcohol and illegal drugs.

Can you write a journal.

Write down what time of day your having an urge~

What happened around you that is triggering that sensation~

Write down any other emotional stuff your thinking. (anger, stress, sad, nervous, and so on.

When you see your doctor at least the doctor will get a picture what is going on. I did that with a medical doctor. Asthma issue.

It all works the same.

you need to tell them how you feel and what your affraid you will do you really have to stress this and dont give up make sure you are heard and that something is done my doctor didnt deal with my PTSD till it was too late and i brokedown worse than normal and i mean really bad make sure they listen and help you.

Let him know what's going on and that your current medications just aren't doing the job. Sometimes the wrong medications can aggrevate the problem rather than help.

I had PTSD when I was a child. I was 14 and on vacation with my mother. When we got back, she dropped me off at my dads house. I was alone in the house and found my dad dead. He had been dead for a week in the middle of summer. As you can imagine, it was quite traumatic.
With my mom being a CCRN, she recognized the importance of prompt care of PTSD. I started seeing a psychiatrist and a psychologist. Everyone kept on top of my care, and would changes and adjust meds as needed.
Hopefully you have support from family and friends. You may need to change meds, until you finally figure out what works. Get into therapy, it really helps.
It's possible to get through this, without succumbing to temptation to take the easy route. I'm 26, and doing great. It takes time, and perseverance, but you will get through it.

Tell the DR that you are aware of how close to the edge you are.

Also Get to a Meeting! before you fall off the wagon.
