Helping a Soldier with PTSD? |
How can I help a soldier with PTSD? He was my BF but he doesn't feel the same way for me after his return from combat and so we are not together anymore. We are "friends" and I really want to be there for him. I just don't know HOW? I don't know how to recognize the signs of PTSD. I know he is depressed for sure. He doesn't go out, he is grumpy, thinks he is a bad person and says to be tired of himself. He also mentioned being near death 5 times and seeing many die. He also told me that he rather have nothing because that way he will not loose. He does go to the University and did good in his classes but other than that he has no friends and no social life. He says everybody is a hypocrite and I think he is including me too...I want to help him. I wonder if my presence does him more harm than good. Any answers will be greatly appreciated. There is no way for you to help him unless he wants help. My mom retired from the VA, and I volunteer for them, (not only that but my entire family is military). I've seen this with veterans and soldiers time and time again. It is a horrible what he is going through, I know i've been diagnosed with PTSD. There is no clear cut signs of PTSD. A trained psychatrist will be the one to diagnose. All you can do is support him in his wishes. He feels that he is at the end of his rope and that is not a good feeling. It is sad but the only person that can help him now is his self. If he is not willing to get help it may be a good idea for you to continue being his friend from a distance. There is no use for more than one person to get hurt in this matter. Urge him to contact his local VA (if he is no longer active) to start recieving benefits. He needssome help and the best place to recieve it will be at a location trained to serve our nations veterans. I hope this helps and my prayers will be with both of you. |
