Is it normal to have PTSD for so many years? |
I am confused -- I was raped 6 years ago ands was diagnosed with PTSD a few months after that -- I thought i was getting better then I was having bad times again last year. What is strange is that I am no longer afraid of the man who did it - or that HE will hurt me. It is just that I am afraid it will happen again by someone else - or someone else will try to harm me. I had some weird phone calls last night - they called and said they were looking for me - and i said i was the one speaking and they hung up - i was alone and didn't sleep all night - it this still PTSD? The doctor said so last year - but i am starting to wonder because i don't worry about the man from 6 years ago -- just my safety now.... It happened to me 50 years ago and there are still "Triggers" that will bring on a flashback. This can last a lifetime. Maybe the occurrences may become less with time, medication & therapy. Yes it is normal for Post Traumatic Stres Disorder to last a long time, maybe even a lifetime. It has been 3 year's for me and I'll be driving down the road and something that I had blocked will just all of a sudden reappear in my mind . When you have this disorder, you block out alot of thing's and out of the blue memorie's will re-surface. of course it's PTSD, it doesn't matter who you are afraid of. yes it can last a lifetime. it can also cause panic attacks. i am 54s yrs. old. i was diagnosed with the disorder over ten yrs. ago and i still have panic attacks and they are terrrible. they have me on medicartion for the attacks. i am anxious alot of the time and it is hard for me to leave my home. i have severe anxiety. i hope yours doesnt get this bad, if it hasnt already. just talk to your doctor and see if he can help you handle it all better. good luck and merry christmas. Rape-Related Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome (RR-PTSD) can often last for years. I hope you are in regular therapy. The fact that you are not conscious of fear towards the old rapist is not that significant in and of itself, as many PTSD patients experience a kind of psychic numbing, where your feelings are walled off. Sleep disturbances are common too. It is also common for the severity of attacks to vary over time, depending on what triggers you experience. The phone calls were a kind of trigger. Please take care of yourself--hoping the best for you! Once you are diagnosed with PTSD you will always have it. You may find ways to deal with it but it will always be there. I would be freaking out too if I had wierd phone calls, I don't think that has to do with PTSD. You can have a positive life in Jesus Christ. You are much beloved by Him. I've had PTSD of about 12 years now. I think that it is normal to over generalize a situation like that, I did too. The incident that happened last night may have nothing to do with PTSD. If I had some weird person call and say they were looking for me I would be freaked out too, PTSD or not. Did you let someone know, like the police about the phone call. They can give you a special number to call right after you get a call like that, it will highlight the number making it easier to trace. I had some stalking issues a few years back. yes Yes Dear, |
