My 2 year old daughter appears to have an allergy to Phenylalanine should I be worried about PKU?

I have been onto the internet and discovered that PKU is when the body can not break down Phenylalanine in the body and appears to be really quite serious condition if not managed.
She had a PKU test a few days old which came back negative. however I am getting slightly concerned that there may have been a mistake in her results and that this may get worse. am I crazy for wanting to get her checked out agagin??

Absolutely not! You are being a responsible parent.

PKU is also a genetic condition, a child can only develop the disease if both parents are carriers. If she had a negative test a birth the family doctor may not want to re-test. You may want to ask for a referral to a pediatric endocrinologist. There is a special diet for kids with PKU. It used to be they only had to stay on it until age 12. as this is when the human brain is fully developed. Now they are keeping people on it for longer periods of time for other health benefits.

I would go ahead and speak with your doctor about your concerns. Also as far as the PKU test did she only have the 1st part of the 2 part test? Around here they do the first part of the test while still in the hospital and then 2-3 weeks later you have to take them back for the second part. If she only had half the test done this could be why the test came back negative. Good luck.

Hard to answer this question without knowing why you doubt the validity of the results? We do not have all the information.

Some people are sensitive to phenylalanine without having PKU, but you can ask for a repeat test if you're concerned.

Talk to your doctor and see what he thinks.

She's only two so there's plenty of time to sort the problem out. Try not to panic.

I'm sensitive to aspartame and I avoid giving my children foods/drinks with these substances in as I don't like some additives and don't trust their safety.

I give my 3 year old half fresh fruit juice (V8 veg and tropical) and half water and he's fine with that.

My other son has a severe nut allergy, so I'm used to reading labels on foods/drinks. If you want to avoid this additive then it's quite easy to get into the habit of reading the labelling. It'll become second nature after a while.
