What artficial sweetener must patient with PKU avoid? Aspartame. Anything with phenylanine in it. I'm positive Equal has phenylanine in it, pretty sure saccharin does NOT have phenylanine. Don't know about Splenda... Anything with phenylalanine - I think the most common is Sweet n Low but Equal might have it too. A lot of diet drinks are sweetened with something that contains phenylalanine. It says right on the package in red so that people know to avoid it. The first answer is correct - aspartame.
