I really need some good sites or information about PID...My bf and I were discussing it the other day when one of his client's called stated she was diagnosed with it.. and me and my bf had a little debate about it being an SID...so can anyone help

Thanks

PID is an inflammation of a woman's uterus and/or ovaries. It can be quite serious and can spread to the intestines and the peritoneum (the covering under your abdominal skin). It should be quickly treated with antibiotics. It is not an STD. However, an infection called chlamydia is an STD that can lead to PID. Both partners need to be treated for that.
PID can be caused from forgetting to remove a tampon, leaving other vaginal infections untreated, and several other problems. An excellent site to answer questions more fully is www.webmd.com and www.emedicine.com. And you should always see your physician if you even suspect an infection like this.

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is a general term for infection and inflammation of the upper reproductive organs in women. It is often, though not always, a complication of a sexually transmitted disease (STD). See an illustration of the female pelvic organs.

PID may include infection and inflammation of:

The fallopian tubes (salpingitis).
The uterine lining (endometritis).
The ovaries (oophoritis).
A fallopian tube and ovary that form a pocket of infection (tubo-ovarian abscess).
PID may also occur inside the abdomen as an abscess, inflammation of the lining of the abdomen (pelvic peritonitis), or inflammation around the liver (perihepatitis).

Pelvic inflammatory disease can occur as a "silent" disease, damaging the reproductive organs without causing symptoms. Although most women recover fully with treatment, some develop serious problems after having PID. About 20% have scarred fallopian tubes that make pregnancy highly unlikely (tubal infertility), and about 20% develop ongoing (chronic) pelvic pain. PID also increases a woman's risk of tubal (ectopic) pregnancy. 1

Untreated pelvic inflammatory disease is a serious health problem with long-term effects. Sexually active teenagers and young adult women, who have the highest risk of getting STDs, are considered a high-risk group for developing PID. 2

What causes PID?

PID usually begins as a sexually transmitted disease (STD) that infects the cervix, which connects the upper vagina to the uterus. Once the cervix is infected with an STD, it becomes easier for other bacteria present in the vagina to get into and infect the uterus and fallopian tubes.

The most common causes of PID are gonorrhea and chlamydia, which are sexually-transmitted diseases. Bacterial vaginosis, an imbalance of normal vaginal organisms, can also make the reproductive tract vulnerable to PID.

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is a general term that refers to infection of the uterus (womb), fallopian tubes (tubes that carry eggs from the ovaries to the uterus) and other reproductive organs. It is a common and serious complication of some sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), especially chlamydia and gonorrhea.
