PID is a very serious public health and personal health issue, and one that goes misdiagnosed/underdiagnosed far too often (up to 2/3 of cases go unrecognized)

It is estimated that 10-15% of women of reproductive age have had one instance of PID

The possible long term complications of PID are:
-damaged fallopian tubes resulting in infertility
-ectopic pregnancy
-chronic pelvic pain

The likelihood of these long term issues are increased with every case of PID you have. The more PID diagnoses, the more likely you will develop the complications.

To be fair, PID is a challenge to diagnose. And the Gold standard for diagnosis involves laparascopic surgery, so most physicians must use a high index of suspicion in the diagnosis.

It is important to comply 100% with treatment and to begin using condoms for each and every sex act to prevent you from being exposed to another sexually transmitted infection (STI) which could lead to another case of PID. You should also know that PID can be caused by things other than STIs.
