Are PET scans safe?

My family has a LAREG amount of cancer ,my riskes may be high. I was thinking of having a PET scan done , are they safe , they do inject a radioactive stuff into you ,, what do you think ?

The risks associated with a PET scan are very minimal. The quantity of radiation is low and the FDG (radioactive drug discussed in the next paragraph) injected into the body degrades quickly so that no detectable radioactivity is present after several hours. In addition to the radioactive decomposition, the remaining FDG is eliminated from the body through urine. Family members are not at risk for exposure since greater than 90% of the radioactivity has left the body or decomposed before the patient has left the center.
FDG stands for 2-Deoxy-2-[18F]fluoro-D-Glucose. It is a type glucose (sugar) and is the most common radioactive drug used in PET. To begin the PET procedure, a small amount of glucose is injected into your bloodstream. There is no danger to you from this injection. Glucose is a common substance that every cell in your body needs in order to function. Diabetic patients do not need to worry; it would take 1,000,000 doses of FDG to equal the glucose in 1 teaspoon of sugar.
FDG has a half-life of approximately 110 minutes, so it is quickly expelled from your body. FDG must pass multiple quality control measures before it is used for any patient injection.
There are no side effects to having a PET scan performed.

They are safe. They inject radioactive dye into you. If a tumor is growing, it has to eat. They inject the dye and you wait for an hour or so, and then do the scan. If any of the dye was metabolized, it will glow on the PET scan. Keep in close touch with your physician.
Best wishes

PET scan is safe, but you have to consult with your doctor before and have some other test if need to be down. You not start with PET scan.

It's worth investigating w/ your doctor. I've had 6 PET-scans, and they are not bad. The hardest part about it holding still for an hour, but the last time I had on done, they only had me on the tablet for about 20 minutes. There is radioactive material injected into you, but there are no ill effects from it. It is very minimal. Good luck and stay healthy!!! --Lymphoma survivor as well!!!
