Can pet scan detect brain cancer? |
In pet scans, cancerous cells accumulate more glucose than normal cells and this is why these cells appear brighter? But i don't know why the brain looks bright in all pet scans? is there away to know whether someone has brain cancer or not by taking a pet scan? Yes, I believe it can. They inject radioactive dye into you. If a tumor is growing, it has to eat. They inject the dye and you wait for an hour or so, and then do the scan. If any of the dye was metabolized, it will glow on the PET scan. Keep in close touch with your physician. Yes, it can detect tumors in the brain. I assume that would be done for brain metastases because primary brain tumors rarely spread. MRIs mainly are used for primary brain tumors. Pet scans are normally not used for brain tumors, because the radioactive sugar they inject into you, about 80-90% of it goes to the brain. This is why the brain always glows in a PET-scan. The rest is dispersed throughout the rest of your body. MRI and brain scans can detect tumors better. Well I have to tell you I had MRI's and CT's a year ago and nothing showed why I was having terrible migraines. I was unable to eat and keep food in, I lost 30 lbs in about 2 months was sick to the point people kept telling me I looked it. Had a Hida scan to rule out my gallbladder, barium study, ultra sounds still no one could find anything. I was beginning to think I was crazy or at least the doctors thought I was. A GI doctor told me I had IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) and ulcers and I would just have to live with it. Six months later I had what appeared to be pink eye...nope...After a PET scan was done it re veiled that I had MALT lymphoma in my cervical spine and in my left eye. Since my radiation therapy I have not had one head ache...after living with them for 7 years. I currently am not taking anymore medicines for them. So I think I can say that with my experience....everyone may is different. Good Luck! Hope this gives alittle insight. No, PET scan cannot detect brain cancer. As you know the brain tissue uses so much glucose that it covers up the tumor cells which may be there. You will see everything looks bright. The best test is MRI scan. |
