Just how risky is a PET scan to eliminate the possibility of cancer in the case of a high AFP reading? Are you asking how accurate PET scans are? Because the scan itself has no risks. PET scans are pretty accurate. PET scans have been proven to be superior to conventional imaging techniques in diagnostic accuracy by pinpointing the disease source. My husband has had many due to Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma and testicular cancer over the past 5 years - the latter having an elevated AFP level. PET scans are usually included in a battery of tests to diagnose and stage cancer, not as the only definitive method.
