What slows the metabolism in the brain during a PET scan? and is it fool proof?

Well simply speaking, our brain is always working even when you are asleep. roughly 20% of the energy produce by the body are use up in the brain (27 % for Liver and Spleen and 25% for all the muscle and the heart). This percentage rise if we are engaged in cognitive thinking.

Anyways, a reduction in metabolism would imply that that part of the brain is not burning sugar ie. not working. In a PET scan if the subject were ask to watch TV we will the the Occipital lob light up like a light bulb, similarly if we ask him to close his eyes, that part of the brain would look as if it had almost shut down (there are still some activity).

However that are limitation to PET scan. It only look at the cerebral cortex, the outer layer of the brain. Structure like the mid-brain, hippocampus, the basal ganglion would be hidden from view. Therefore like any other type of imaging technique it is not fool proof
