HPV- Warts/ abnormal pap smear?

I had a pap smear done about 4 months ago and it came back abnormal, so my dr had me come back last week and get it redone. while i was there he told me that the hpv test said i had the low risk one, but my pap smear was abnormal... he said that the lo risk one doesnt cause abnormal pap smears...it can cause warts though, and that is what showed up on the hpv test. He said only the high risk one shows abnormal pap smears.... he said that that all was very odd and he;d never seen it before...has anyone had this happen or know anything about this?

The thing that most people aren't aware of concerning Pap smears is that one irregular test doesn't mean anything.

The Pap smear is a "catch all" in that it is very good at catching most people with abnormal cell growth, however it is not very specific. An abnormal reading on one Pap smear can be gone by the next one (and may not have been there at all). That is why Pap smears are given on a regular basis, because as a repetitive screening process its accuracy improves.

So, there is some missing info in your question that would help me answer your question better, but with what you have provided....

I am assuming by "abnormal" you mean atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance" or ASCUS. When ASCUS is found on one Pap, you should go in for a repeat test. After that test, if ASCUS is still present, then you should undergo colposcopy so that your doctor can get a better look and can give you a definitive diagnosis.

It may be possible that you have more than one strain of HPV (many people do). Simultaneous infection with multiple strains has been observed in 5-30% of women with HPV*. I would suggest undergoing the HPV DNA test again. But, if it is ASCUS that was found on your Pap, it could literally be absolutely nothing and it may not be present at your next Pap.

It is possible for a high risk strain to cause genital warts but it is pretty rare. There are 13 high risk HPV strains for cervical cancer according to the International Agency for Research on Cancer monograph on cervical cancer screening, while other types have been implicated in skin and oral-pharyngeal cancers, as well as with cancer of the anus and penis.*

From personal experience, i can help answer this question a little.
i had an abnormal pap smear last christmas, but i have never been diagnosed with hpv. i've had hpv tests and they've all came back negative. Just because you have an abnormal papsmear DOES NOT mean you have hpv. There is many different chemical imbalances in your body that can cause a pap smear to be abnormal. For instance cell changings, which we lose and gain cells everyday...so it could possibly be something like abnormal cells. which is nothing to worry about, because many women get them in their life time. if he said you are "low risk" did he diagnose you? or did he say you are "low risk" for contracting the virus. you might not even have it, but i would have them do a pelvic exam just to be sure. Good Luck

Both high risk and low risk HPV cause abnormal cell changes.

Some types of HPV are referred to as 鈥渓ow-risk鈥?viruses because they rarely develop into cancer. HPV types that are more likely to lead to the development of cancer are referred to as 鈥渉igh-risk.鈥?Both high-risk and low-risk types of HPV can cause the growth of abnormal cells, but generally only the high-risk types of HPV may lead to cancer.

Both high-risk and low-risk types of genital HPV can cause changes or growths on the tissue of a woman's cervix.

Low-grade Lesions
If the host immune system can not adequately contain the virus, then beginning 3-6 months after infection, HPV can lead to genital warts and low-grade lesions of the cervix [Gravitt, 2005] (Figure 18). The latter consist of mild changes in the cellular structure and organization of the basal portion of the cervical epithelium caused by abnormal proliferation of cells infected by either high- or low-risk types of HPV. These low-grade lesions are known pathologically as cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) 1 or cytologically as low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (LSIL); koilocytes are often present.
