Abnormal pap smear after baby?

I am 17 and I had my baby 2 months ago. At my 6 week check up they did a papsmear and I was informed today that the results were abnormal and I need to go back in 6 months for a repeat pap smear. Is it normal to have an abnormal pap smear after having a baby? What does a pap smear check for? What does it mean if it is abnormal?

YES I HAD ONE TOO, THEY JUST GAVE ME SOME MEDECINE, LIKE AN ANTIBIOTIC OR SOMETHING AND I WAS FINE AFTER THE 2ND ONE, DON'T WORRY!

Abnormal Pap-smears are caused by only 2 things.
1. Cervical cancer cells or pre-cancerous cells
2. HPV
It's extremely rare (about 1% of people) to actually have pre-cancerous cells on your cervix without having HPV and usually only happens after the age of 40.

HPV is the number one cause of an abnormal pap-smears. It's the Human Papillomavirus and it has well over 100 different types. It the most common sexually transmitted disease in the world, and it's nearly impossible not to get it if you have sex.
HPV cannot be prevented by wearing condoms, because any genital contact transmits it. 4 out of every 5 people have HPV, so imagine if you were at a concert with 20,000 people 19,999 of those people would be infected with HPV.

They have just released a vaccine for HPV for this reason, I don't know much about the vaccine except that they are trying to make it mandatory for every girl.

HPV is the virus responsible for causing warts if you are lucky enough to get a strain that actually causes warts then you probably don't have to worry about the abnormal paps.
If you are unfortunate enough to have one of the "no lesion" types, then you can be riddled with abnormal paps and other procedures to follow them, if you are very unfortunate and get an aggressive strain then you could be in trouble as far as having to battle cervical cancer.

The good news is that with most cases of HPV your body tends to suppress the virus after 2 years, and it's usually not heard form again. That is unless you contract a new type with sexual contact.

Hormones can cause "cancer" to grow and your pregnancy was loaded with them, so it probably just fed the HPV and that's probably why your pap was abnormal. After your hormones have a chance to return to a regular state then you should be checked again. Probably in 3 months rather than 6 though, just to be on the safe side.
It's very important to get regular check ups because HPV can cause no symptoms at all but can cause havoc on you cervix.

Congratulations on your new bundle of joy!
