Pap smear and nuvaring..?

i am going for my first pap smear next week...i have to admit i been putting it off for a long time! i hate going to the gyno when i go he just does a pelvic exam and that is it... now i finally decided to go with one of my friends to try to make it better for me...thing is that i am on the nuvaring (a birthcontrol method that requires u to place a ring inside your vagina) and i would like to know if the nuvaring can cause a change in the outcome of my test results...and can anyone help me with my fear of pap smears...and going to a gyno...thanks so much!

The Nuva Ring will not effect the results of a pap smear. A pap smear is a sample of cells from around the cervix and inside the cervix. The Nuva Ring sits anywhere inside the vagina, it will not cause abnormal changes to your cervix.

The best thing you can do during your pap and pelvic exam is to take nice slow deep breaths and relax your muscles. The more you tighten up the harder it is for you and your doctor to get through the exam. You should not feel pain, especially if you are relaxed. You will feel a small twinge on your cervix while the cells are being collected but this should just be slightly annoying, NOT painful. Just remember that a pap smear is an excellent screening method for detecting precanerous and cancerous cells.

I was really nervous my first time as well but I let the doctor know that it was my first time. She said ok and then talked me through the entire thing and let me know exactly what she was doing before she even did it. It really helped out a lot and even though it is uncomfortable it doesn't hurt. I really have no idea about the nuva ring though. Let the doctor know about that too, they will know if it will affect.
