Negative pap smear , but high risk HPV?

for 2 consecutive tests, my pap smear came out negative, but my high risk type hpv is still present. The ob-gyn recommended that I have biopsy, because we dont know when I actually started having hpv, and she said that sometimes pap smears are not that accurate in detecting bad cells... is this right?

I would get a second opinion on the biopsy thing. If your pap is normal, there shouldn't be a reason to get a biopsy??? And yes, they hurt like HELL!!! The doctor makes you cough and then jabs your cervix with a sharp claw like thingie and takes a chunk out and then they repeat this a couple times to take chunks out from different parts of the cervix. Also, they can't numb it because that would affect the samples taken.

I would not personally do a biopsy now. A Schiller test with iodine staining and two Paps are enough. In the hands of a careful screener Paps are highly accurate.

A Pap smear can miss abnormal cells.

I think you doctor is wanting to a colposcopy to have a better look at the cervix. He will biopsy any thing that looks unusual. Using a vinegar wash or a stain to see stain to see abnormal cells better. The biopsy doesn't hurt...it is more of a pinch...it is over pretty quick. A biopsy is not fun鈥ut necessary. Your doctor will give you instructions on what to do after a biopsy...usually nothing in the vagina for a week or so.
