Ionic air purifiers and ozone emission..? |
I want to purchase an air purifier. Since HEPA ones are noisey, thinking of ionic. But I ve heard they omit some ozone, eventhough the level is below industrial safety level. I had the Sharper Image ionic purifier for about 3 years. The ozone odor at times is recognizable and not unpleasant but not a desirable thing to be breathing. Consumers reports has reviewed this purifier on several occasions and flunked it because the ionic mechanism does not move enough air to adequately filter even a small room. Indeed I saw no difference in the dust accumulation when I used it. I now have a small Hunter with HEPA filter. The noise is tolerable after a while and there is a noticeable and significant decrease in the amount of dust. The drawback compared to the ionic is the filter is not cheap (mine about 22$) and needs to be replaced every 3months or 6 if you really stretch it. My allergist says that they can make you more congested. Something with the ionic. In my daughter case she was right. got rid of the Sharper Image and had to get a HEPA. |
