Good Air Purifier?

What is the best air purifier for removal of dust and odor? I have been looking at ebay and is almost convinced on buying ecoquest (with hepa, uv, ionizer, and ozone generator). The only thing that still prevents me fom buying this ($219) is the ozone generator which can induce asthma. I am an asthmatic. Anyone with a good experience with a VERY GOOD air purifier? I can only afford <$300 and does not consume much electricity, with low maintenance. Thanks.

I strongly recommend against getting an ozone generator or ionizer. They are the same thing and will aggravate your asthma. The theory behind the ionizers and ozonators is the creation of ozone while "ionizing" the dust particles to make them collect in the filter. The EPA has warned that they are not suitable for places where people live. They have been linked to frequent respiratory problems in people who use them. The "germs" that the ionizers and ozone generators are supposed to be able to kill can only be killed if the filter is set to a level so high it would kill any living thing in its presence. They are great for corporations that are closed overnight, but not for any place that people inhabit 24/7.

HEPA filters are the safest way to go. I have one by Filterqueen that is fabulous. They offer a charcoal filter for it to get rid of odors and the charcoal filter makes air "hospital quality". They also sell a vacuum with a HEPA filter, and it has a charcoal filter as well. It never kicks up dust, but it is bagless, so you'd have to deal with the dust in the end. Usually, I wear a mask and disposable gloves while changing out the cone filter and dumping out the debris. (I do it outdoors for the least amount of contamination inside.)

You can always choose a different air filter than what I use. Just make sure, for your own health, that you only use HEPA filters/charcoal filters. The ozone generators are bad for your health, and ionizers generate ozone as well.
